Fissure Sealants Bank Place Dental
Have you ever looked closely at your molars? If you do, you might just notice that there are tiny grooves and lines all along the surface of the teeth. For some people, these lines can deep and narrow, meaning that they’re hard to reach when cleaning. As such, they can be more susceptible to decay, which is why we may sometimes recommend fissure sealants here at Bank Place Dental.
Fissure sealants follow the all important model of prevention being better than a cure, and their purpose is to prevent bacteria plaque from building in the little grooves and lines in your molars, reducing the chance of tooth decay.
They are made of a flowable tooth coloured material that is placed on the biting surfaces of molars and premolars to stop bacteria from being trapped in those grooves and making it smooth and easy to keep clean.
Your teeth are polished and the tooth being sealed is isolated and dried using a dental dam. This tooth is then etched. Then, the sealant material is brushed over the tooth and cured with a light that helps it set quickly as it bonds to the tooth
Even after the sealant is fixed, good oral hygiene is still essential. We will keep evaluating the sealant to make sure that it is in place and working properly, as well as providing further advice on your home dental routine. If you can see yourself having deep grooves in your molars, be sure to talk to one of our friendly dentists for a recommendation at your next appointment.
