Tooth Abscess
Also known as a tooth abscess, a dental abscess is a buildup of bacteria in the nerve space (pulp) of the tooth, in the bone around the root tips of a tooth or within in gums. It can be extremely painful, often in the form of lingering sensitivity, a constant ache or swelling. It can also present with a fever, a foul taste or wobbly teeth. The two types of abscesses found in the mouth are
● Periodontal: This kind occurs in the gum pockets surrounding your tooth.
● Periapical: This kind starts inside the tooth and affects the bone around the root tips of the tooth.
In the majority of cases, dental abscesses occur once the nerve of a tooth has died. A tooth can die from trauma or as a direct result of tooth decay extending into the pulp (nerve space) of the tooth. Once the pulp is affected the infection spreads through the roots of the tooth and out into the bony space around the root.
Periodontal abscesses are caused by bacteria building up in the pockets that exist between the tooth and gum.
