Dental crowns are an artificial replacement or “cap” for natural teeth. They are made of metal, porcelain or zirconia in most cases and are designed to be placed over a tooth, covering it either partially or completely. As such, they are a great option for teeth that are weakened, such as teeth with large fillings, cracks, or teeth that have gone through a root canal treatment. Unlike dental implants, they don’t require the tooth to be removed.
Crowns are also often considered as a cosmetic option, allowing people to permanently alter the shape and colour of their teeth. As they are very strong, crowns are a great way to prolong the life of the natural teeth beneath, too.
