Root Canal Treatment Bank Place Dental
Root canal treatments, often referred to as RCT for short, are a treatment that is primarily used to help save a tooth that has gone through significant decay or trauma that has caused the tooth to die and become infected. The name “root canal” refers to the chamber that is naturally in the middle of the root inside the tooth, where the pulp (nerves and blood vessels) of the tooth is.
This treatment is one that involves removing the dead pulp tissue and any infection within the root canal system. Over the course of 2-3 appointments we continue to disinfect the root canal system by cleaning, shaping, measuring and medicating them.
Once the infection has been removed, we can fill the root spaces with a root filling. A root canal treatment is performed to ensure that the tooth can be saved and that any infection does not spread to, for instance, your bones or bloodstream.
In some cases, extraction of the tooth may be necessary in the event of infection or trauma reaching the nerve system, especially if the tooth is no longer strong enough to survive.
In most cases, the root canal treatment will occur over two or three appointments. They go as follows:
- The dentist will start by taking X-rays of your teeth to see the extent of the damage and the condition of the tooth and roots. While preparing for your treatment, we will likely use local anaesthetic to ensure you feel minimal discomfort.
- A dental dam will be placed around the tooth, keeping it dry and ensuring that any chemicals used during the treatment are not swallowed.
- After this, the dentist will open the tooth to remove any pulp debris and infection, and a dose of disinfectant will be left.
- Your dentist will reassess the root system, cleaning it and shaping the root canals by filing carefully into it to make sure they are smooth, even, and ready for filling. This part of the process may take multiple visits, and you will have a dose of disinfectant and temporary filling at the end of each.
- Once the infection is resolved and the root canals are an ideal shape we fill them with root filling and the temporary filling is eplaced with a permanent filling..
Further treatment to restore the tooth, such as adding a crown to cover and protect the natural tooth, or whitening the tooth, can be discussed as necessary.
When you arrange a root canal treatment with Bank Place Dental, we will do everything we can to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery, including providing you with aftercare instructions. Your restored tooth should not feel the same pain as it did before the treatment, but we may recommend over-the-counter painkillers for any remaining discomfort.
